Welcome to Spending Smart: Confessions of a Reformed Financial Advisor.
The course includes a PDF copy of the book, twenty videos, course and lesson objectives with study guide and action steps. You will also be enrolled in the private Spending Smart community.
This course challenges the significant flaws in traditional economics and finance, which rely on the concept of the "rational man" (*homo economicus*) who is assumed to always make wise, non-emotional financial choices. Conventional financial advice operates on the flawed belief that consumers spend rationally. In reality, we are emotional beings who think, not purely rational actors, and our brains are not "hardwired" to work well with money, prioritizing survival and instant gratification instead of smart financial decisions.
The goal is to move beyond the standardized, incomplete approach of most personal finance courses by focusing on your unique money temperament. You will learn to use the Money Behavior System—a values-based, behavioral roadmap—to develop a "one-size-fits-you" action plan. This system involves three steps:
1. Discover your Money Values, which define what is truly important about money to you.
2. Uncover your natural Money Temperament and your Money Learning Style (how you prefer to take in and process information).
3. Unleash a personalized, value-driven strategy to manage your finances and feelings about money more effectively.
By the end of this course, you will have the foundation necessary to develop a tailored strategy and plan for financial well-being.
